    BACKGROUND: Most of our contemporary knowledge about function(s) of cellular membranes has come from nanoscale analysis of membrane systems. The nano length-scale is set by functional compartmentalization, by subdivision of membrane systems of eukaryotic cells into functional nanodomains consisting of defined proteo-lipid mixtures. The most recent progress in functional analysis of proteo-lipid nanostructures involved in signal transduction, membrane remodeling and material transport in cells as well as emerging novel applications of proteo-lipid complexes in nanotechnology will be discussed by leading experts in the field.
